Importance of railways are as follows----
1. Railways are the cheapest mode of transportation for carrying people and heavy good over long distances.
2. Advaned technology has enabled laying of railway lines in terrains (hills and deserts) difficult to reach.
3. Invention of deisel and electric engines has largely replaced the steam engine that has helped to reduce air pollution.
4. Now-a-days super fast bullet trains are in use all over the world which have made our journey even faster.

The Railways are important because:
1. Railways are the major transport facility and service in the world.
2. They are a cheap and convenient public commutation option for people in urban areas. Many have to go long distances in big cities. They use metros.
3. It is a safer transport facility for long distances.
4. The journey times are more or less predictable. It is tedious to travel by personal transport over long distances.
5. Railway network is very huge. The number of people/passengers is very large. So it is important.
6. Railways carry mails and couriers.
7. Railways are a major employer, employing thousands and lakhs of employees.
8. Railways take part in the development of the country with introduction of latest technologies.
9. Modern transport techniques reduce the journey duration significantly. So the people's business and personal plans could be improved.
10. Railways carry a large amount of goods.
11. To a drought hit region in Maharashtra , water was transported by a train in 2016.
12. As it is a public transport, the use of fuel (oil/electricity) per passenger is minimum. It is quite less as compared to individual transport.
