About Rowlatt Act

The Rowlatt Act was a legislative act passed by the Imperial Legislative Council in London on March 10, 1919, indefinitely extending "Emergency Measures" enacted during the First World War in order to control public unrest and root out conspiracy in India.

Importance :-

★ The British government passed the infamous Rowlatt Act which gave enormous powers to the police to arrest any person without any reason whatsoever.

★ The purpose of the Act was to curb the growing nationalist upsurge in the country.

★ Gandhi called upon the people to do Satyagraha against such oppressive "Act".

Effects :-

★ Rowlatt Act was an oppressive act introduced by the British Government in 1919.

★ It gave the Government enormous powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.
