There are about 750 parties which are registered with the election commission of India..
Therefore, All parties cannot be recognised..
Only those parties which have a symbol is said to be recognised...
These symbols are unique and no two party has a same symbol..
This is the importance..
The symbol is given by the election commission of India..

It goes back to the early 1800's when "a picture" was worth a thousand words, they did not have the communication tools like we have today, and people were not as literate as we are as a nation today back then, so it was very easy to "tell" others what you stood for via an icon.
Still powerful today, but not like "back then".
One of the biggest problems for many voters when a large part of the population is still illiterate, is how to identify their chosen candidates on the ballots. The Election Commission, thus, has the laborious task of allocating separate election symbols for each party and the innumerable independent candidates. The symbols chosen are such that they can be easily understood, remembered and recognised by the average voter, b'coz everybody is not educated & also just when the voter sees the symbol he/she will have an idea of that particular party. The symbols are so important that today certain parties are identified by their symbols. If there is a hammer and sickle on a poster, it means the candidate is a member of the Communist Party of India, Marxist.
