Explanation:

Matter in the solid state maintains a fixed volume and shape, with component particles (atoms, molecules or ions) close together and fixed into place. Matter in the liquid state maintains a fixed volume, but has a variable shape that adapts to fit its container.

A matter is something that takes up space . There are three stages of matter - Solid, Liquid & Gas . When a solid is melted it turns in to liquid which furthermore leads to turning gas . As the solid is heated it takes form in liquid state and then gaseous state ( gas state ). For example, when an ice cube is kept at room temperature in spot of a sunlight for some time it will eventually turn into water ( liquid state ) due to the warmth in the air and the heat of the sun . Again, if we come back a moments later we can see the the water is no longer there. It has evaporated into the air due to the excessive heat of the sun . So the intermediate state between Solid and Gas is Liquid .
