The main function of mitochondria is to metabolize or break down carbohydrates and fatty acids in order to generate energy. Eukaryotic cells use energy in the form of a chemical molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

 \large \textbf {Mitochondria-}

-The mitochondria are tiny bodies of varying shapes and sizes, distributed in the cytoplasm.

-Each mitochondria is bounded by a doubled membrane envelope.

-Outer membrane is porous.

-The inner membrane is thrown into folds and, therefore, have an area several times the surface of area of the outer membrane.

-These folds are called cristae and they are studded with small rounded bodies known as F_1 particle or oxysomes.

-The interior cavity of the mitochondria is filled with a proteinaceous matrix which contains a few small sized ribosomes, a circular DNA molecules and phosphate granules.

-Mitochondria are absent in bacteria and the red blood cells of mammals.
