Hope it helps!! Mark this answer as brainliest if u found it useful and follow me for quick and accurate answers...

Step-by-step explanation:

This can be found by subtracting:

86-12=74 (this excludes number 12)

74-1=73 in order to exclude 86 as well, because we only need count of those numbers in between the given ones

So the answer is 73 whole numbers

In normal subtraction, we sort of measure distance between two numbers. This way larger number is included but lower number is excluded

for example

to measure gap between 11 and 3, we use 11 - 3. we start counting from 4 and ends at 11 because at 4 length 1 is completed (gap between 3 and 4) and at 11 length 8 is completed. But this way number 3 is excluded because we leave 3 at the start of subtraction and land at 11 at completion of subtraction so 11 is included.

Now, if we want to include 3 also i.e. we want to count number of numbers from 3 to 11 (including 3 and 11), we will have to add 1 to the result of subtraction i.e. 11 - 3 + ,1

If we want to exclude both 3 and 11, we will have to reduce the result by 1 (so that we may exclude 11, 3 is already excluded in the subtraction). like in this problem.

total number of numbers BETWEEN 12 and 86 means we have to exclude both 12 and 86, so the result is. 86 - 12 - 1

hope I was clear enough
