its the rate of change of velocity by time taken.
if v take a moving body it dosen't have same kinda motion through out its journey.there m8 b a change in speed of the b ody due to speed brakes or an obstacle . so the speed or velocity changes. so now the rate of change of velocity is called as acceleration.
acceleration =v2-v1/2
