Buffer stock is the stock of food grains namely wheat and rice procured by the government through Food Corporation of India.
The government launched buffer stock for the following reasons :
> It was created to distribute food grains in the deficit areas of the country.
> Food grains from the buffer stock are distributed among the poor strata of the society at lower price than market price.
> It also helps the problem of shortage of food during adverse weather
conditions or during the periods of calamity.
