This expression was used by Helen, the ghost when she was telling him her experience as writer in her other life. She told him she was a writer before becoming a ghost; and she could not be successful in it as she found it quite difficult. She had to give up writing. She further told him that all the memories related to writing were more painful than the pains of hell.

It means that Helen, the ghost, had went to work of being a writer for ghost stories mistaking it for paradise and sometimes she realized that the task had more to suffer and that it was like hell or purgatory

Well, purgatory is the state or sufferings of the souls of sinners that they inhabit and expiate their sins before going to heaven (in short it is similar to hell i.e नर्क)

Hope it helps..

Thanks
