A sudden contraction of one or more muscles is called as muscle cramps.

Muscle cramps occur when anaerobic respiration takes place in our muscles. In anaerobic respiration, glucose is converted into lactic acid which leads to the lack of oxygen in muscles.

Overuse of muscles, muscle strain or dehydration causes cramps in muscles. Most of the cramps are harmless, some of the cramps are because of underlying medical condition, like inadequate blood supply.

How cane we get relief of it ?

  • A hot water bath.

  • A massage

These two things improve the blood circulation in body and leads to increasing oxygen supply in the muscles.

And then, lactic acid breaks down into Carbon dioxide and water.

Anaerobic Respiration

The respiration in which sugar is break down into glucose to generate energy without the use of oxygen or in the absence of oxygen.

Equation : glucose → Carbon dioxide + lactic acid

Example : Fermentation.
