Hi There!
This can be referred to as a subject as well as the thing itself.
For the THING: The Earth is made of mainly three parts:
Crust, Mantle and Core
Plate Tectonics are the parts beneath the Crust. They are suspended within the vast amount of water. They are made of many things eg molten lava, etc
These are large semi solid to solid plates which form the Crust and beneath. They have parts and not a single thing.
They are in regular motion and cause continents to move. For more details, study Plate tectonic Theory..
They are called Tectonics because it relates to the structure of the earth's crust and the large scale processes which take place within.
and Tectonics literally mean "carpenter, builder" from the Greek word "tekton"
The subject is Plate Tectonic Theory is a part of GeoMorphology . It includes the creation and the processes of these plates
hope it helps!
