As we have already come to know in the preceding stanzas of the poem, the poet longs to retreat to a place known as Innisfree to spent some time there is blissful solitude. In this stanza he is shaken back to reality, to the world of dull, grey pavements and busy urban life that he is currently in. The place he is standing is miles away from Innisfree, yet the poet can still hear the gentle lapping of the water as the waves of the lake crashes onto the shore all throughout the day and night. His inner conscience keeps reminding him of Innisfree no matter how far he may be (physically).
