What is the meaning of the phrase I would be away for five years, and at her age one could never tell. ?

when the author was going abroad for his further studies he thought that her grandmother would be upset as in his point of view she would not be alive till he returns so he had said that I would be away for five years and, at her age one could never tell. But his grandmother thought in a different way and she knew that she would be alive till her grandson returns that is why she was not even emotional at the time she to leave the author at the railway station.
