The message is -

It used to convey us that we should take care of our pets and be responsible towards our pets. Keep pets is our choice and keeping them in home is living with a family member. They becomes a part of our family. We should be good, and polite to our pets so that they will feel good and comfortable to live. We should create a friendly environment for our pets.

In the story the narrator creates conducive surroundings for his pet. There was enough water in the bathroom for his pet so that otter can jump and roll. He also gives some toys to his pet to play. He carries some toys with him always. He was not cruel tohis pet.
