metals and non-metals are types of elements.
Metal- lustrous,ductile,malleable,sonorous,conductive and hard.ex-iron,copper
non-metal- non lustrous,non ductile,non malleable,insulator,and soft.ex-graphite,phosphorous
however there are exceptions like mercury which is a metal but possess some qualities of non metal and diamond which is non metal but possess the quality of metal.

Nice question..
Here is ur answer :
METALS
Metals are the element which looses the electron to form positive charge or cation.
Examples :- copper, gold, iron
Characteristics of Metals:
1. They are good conductors of electricity and heat.
2. They are solid at room temperature except mercury which is liquid at room temperature.
3. They are sonorous in nature
4. They are brittle and malleable.
5. They possess high density.
6. High melting point and boiling point.
7. They possess ductility.
8. They have high tensile strength.
9. They are lustrous in nature.
NON METAL
Non metal are elements which readily gain electrons to form an anion or negative charge.
