The person in the picture is a very popular classical dancer, Sudha Charan.
She performs Bharatnatyam and is also an actress. She had an accident in June of 1981 which resulted in a cut, but due to improper care, it resulted in gangrene (an organ dying due to improper circulation and/or a bacterial infection). Her right foot was amputated, and I'm guessing that is what the article in the book (picture) is about.
