Population inversion is a process of achieving more electrons in the higher energy state than the lower energy state. In order to achieve population inversion, we need to supply energy to the laser medium. The process of supplying energy to the laser medium is called pumping.

We need to achieve population inversion to have amplified stimulated emission.
- In a substance, most of the electrons are in the ground state.
- When we supply energy to the atoms (called pumping), some atoms go from the ground state to the metastable state.
- The stimulated emissions from the metastable state release photons which excite the other atoms.
- This process continues till we achieve the population inversion.
- The process in which the number of electrons in the metastable state becomes more than the number of electrons in the ground state is known as population inversion.
- After this, a large number of photons together get released as a beam from the partially reflecting side of the laser.
- Hence, population inversion is necessary for laser action.
