  • During respiration, some of oxygen is converted to carbon dioxide.
  • Hence, expired air has more percentage of carbon dioxide and less of oxygen as compared to inspired air.
  • Percentage of nitrogen is well maintained during exchange.

◆ Inspired air -

Composition of inspired air is as follows -

  • Nitrogen => 79 %
  • Oxygen => 21 %
  • Carbon dioxide => 0.04 %

◆ Expired air -

Composition of expired air is as follows -

  • Nitrogen => 80 %
  • Oxygen => 16 %
  • Carbon dioxide => 4 %
