Consider for a second what makes a zero at the end.

You obtain a zero at the end when you get a factor of 10 which must have prime factors of 2 and 5.

For every factor of 5 that you can pair with a two, you obtain a factor of 10. Separating 500 into 5 and 100, we can see 100 has two zeroes and two factors of 10; on the other hand, the remaining 5, even when squared (especially when squared), can not be paired with a 2, and so won’t be able to form any factors of 10 and is useless in context of the question.

This entire process might initially seem as an attempt to complicate rather than simplify , but its applications are astounding for larger and quirky numbers!

The reason is simple: there in no need to calculate the square of 500 or any number given to us. In general, factorisation is far simpler than performing gigantic calculations.
