The order of electron gain enthalpy of nitrogen family is :

N<P<As<Sb<Bi

  • Electron gain enthalpy - is defined as the amount of energy released when an electron is added to an isolated gaseous atom.

  • The electron gain enthalpy increases down the group in the case of grp-15 (which is opposite to the normal trend or as compare to the other group in which it decreases down the group).

  • As in the group-15 there is half - filled electronic configuration , so it has symmetrical configuration and it is already stable so they do not want to take an extra electron as it consumes more energy which make them unstable.

  • In case of nitrogen , it has small size and higher electron density so the upcoming electron will experience more inter-electronic repulsion due to which it has positive electron density as it doesn't accept the electron easily.

  • In case of the other elements , as we go down the group atomic size increases so they will experience less inter-electronic repulsion and it will decreases down the group hence down the group negative electron gain enthalpy increases .
