The compound is a metal hydride, and hydrogen as a hydride is assigned an oxidation state of -1. The sum of the oxidation numbers for a compound must add up to zero. Li and Al are both metals and (almost) always exhibit positive oxidation numbers. Li is +1 and Al is +3....
