The structure of K3CrO8 is Tetragonal.

Let oxidation number of Cr = x

3 + x + 8 * ( - 2 ) = 0

3 + x - 16 = 0

x = 13

x = 5

but since chromium can have the max of only + 5 oxidation state.
This contrary is solved by the bonding pattern as shown in structure.
The Cr is attached to only 5 oxygen through single bond hence oxidation state = 5.

Hey there,

Lets take a look at the compound K₃CrO₈. It contains 3 Potassium atoms, 1 chromium atom and 8 oxygen atoms.

So Oxidation number of Cr be x, then-

3(1)+x-8(-2)=0
x=+13

But chromium can have a maximum valency of +5 since it will have 8 electrons in valence shell in the noble gas configuration.

If you take a look, at the structure of K₃CrO₈, you will see that Cr atom is attached to 5 O atoms hence its oxidation state is +5.
