add the oxidation numbers of all known elements and then sum it all up.

Oxygen is -2. Hence -8 for four Oxygen’s.

Hydrogen is +1. Hence +2 for two Hydrogen’s.

Now to balance the equation,

+2–8 = +6

Hence the Sulfur has +6 oxidation number in Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)
