The oxidation of nitrogen in NH4+ is -3. The hydrogen atoms have +1 and there are four of them. And net charge on the molecule is +1. Let nitrogen's oxidation state be x.

hope it will help you.

Let the oxidation state of N be x.

Valency of H=+1, V=+5, O=-2.

We can see that in NH4VO3 there are 4 atoms of H, 1 atom of N, one atom of V and 3 atoms of O.

So the equation is :

x*(1) + 1*(4) + 5*(1) -2*(3) = 0

x = -3

So the oxidation state of N in NH4VO3 is -3
