In Na3PO4 Na oxidation state is +1 and O oxidation state is -2. So in Na3PO4 3-Na got +3, and 4-O got -8 charge which gives coverall -5 charge. As Na3PO4 is neutral so to do neutral -5, P shows +5 oxidation state.

Answer:

The oxidation state of P in Na_3PO_4 is +5.

Explanation:

The oxidation state of phosphorus in sodium phosphate is calculated by using simple algebraic calculation.

The oxidation state of sodium is +1.

So the oxidation state of 3 sodium is +3.

The charge on oxygen is -2. So 4 oxygen atom will have -8 charge.

So, to calculate the charge on phosphorus in sodium phosphate the charge on the other known atoms are added together and this equation will be equal to zero as there is no charge on the salt i.e. sodium phosphate.

The oxidation state of phosphorus assumed to be x.

3 + x -8 = 0

x = +5.

Oxidation state of P is +5.
