Answer:

A population pyramid, also called an "age-sex-pyramid", is a graphical illustration that shows the distribution of various age groups in a population (typically that of a country or region of the world), which forms the shape of a pyramid when the population is growing.

Explanation:

An interesting way of studying the population composition of a country is by looking at thepopulation pyramid, also called an age-sex pyramid. A population pyramid shows the total population divided into various age groups, e.g., 5 to 9 years, 10 to 14 years. It also shows the percentage of the total population, subdivided into males and

females, in each of those groups.

The shape of the population pyramid of a

country reveals two major details about the

people, age group and sex ratio. The numbers of children (below 15 years) are shown at the bottom. The numbers of aged people (above 65 years) are shown at the top. The people below 15 years and above 65 years of age are taken as dependents of the economically active population that falls between 15 and 65 years of age. These two groups constitute the part of the population which does not earn and which is dependent on the working people for sustenance. The age group that falls between 15 and 65 (shown in the middle) indicates the working population of a country. A comparison of the two groups is used to calculate the dependency ratio of a country. Due to rapidly developing medical technology and improving standards of living many children survive to adult hood. This adds to the stock of adult population, making the centre bulge. The life expectancy of such a country slowly increases. India is a classic example. In 2005, India had the highest dependency ratio; however, between 2005 and 2025, India’s ratio is expected to experience the largest decline. There is a possibility that India will have a large number of senior citizens by 2050 due high life expectancy (66 for men and 71 for women), thanks to medical technology. In our country the sex ratio is not balanced. Except in Kerala, in all the other states of India the female population is lesser that the male population.
