mercury expands uniformly as temperatures up. Mercury thermometer have glass bulb and a narrow uniform glass and there is a kink between them. When you measure a body temperature mercury goes up in the tube mercury in the glass bulb expands. till the expansion for that temperature..After reading when temperature comes down the mercury column breaks at the kink and it remain sin the same position .when you want to,measure again you shake it and bring he mercury down. this description is about clnical mercury thermometer.
