The principle that is used is as follows :

The impurities present in the liquid settle down at the bottom slowly because it is heavier.

After some time , the impurities have completely settled down and the supernatant liquid can be collected in another beaker .

Care is taken so that we pour the water very gently such that impurities do not fall in the clear water.

This ensures proper purification of water.

we can purify water by sedimentation .

this process starts by putting alum into water and after few minutes upper layer of water will look transparent means purified.
