The principle of hydropower is that the potential energy of the water stored at great heights in the dam is converted in to kinetic energy by allowing the water to flow at high speed. Then the kinetic energy of flowing water used to generate electricity.

Explanation:

Hydroelectricity is the conversion of energy of water flowing through rivers or stored in a dam into electricity. The energy of the naturally flowing water in high rivers is stored behind the dams as potential energy. When this water falls on the big water wheels called turbines at a hydroelectric power plant, potential energy of water is converted into kinetic energy of water wheels which start rotating. These in turn rotate the armature of generator and produce electricity
