It is called Reverse Osmosis (RO).

In this technique, very high pressure P is used to drive the liquid (water) to flow from higher concentration to lower concentration of impurities. The movement takes place across a semipermeable membrane which does not allow impurities to pass through it.

The pressure exerted is above the Osmotic pressure. If no pressure is exerted on the high concentration side, then water flows from lower concentration to higher concentration. This is the normal Osmosis. Using high pressure, the movement of water is done in the reverse direction. So it is called RO.

Nowadays most of the water filters use the principle of RO : Reverse Osmosis.
