Our Constitution is a mixture of rigidity and flexibility. It has a unique procedure for amendment mentioned in Article 368.There are three different ways to amend the constitution:

1.Some categories of amendment like creation of new states, creation or abolition of second chamber of the states, changes in citizenship etc requires the presence of a simple majority in both the Houses of the Parliament. So, amendment in this case is flexible.

2.Certain other provisions of the Constitution if needed to be amended, then it requires both a majority of the total membership in each House of Parliament and a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting in each House of parliament.

3. Finally, certain special categories such as Presidential power and modes of election, the extent of the Executive and Legislative Powers of the Union or the States etc requires

a majority of the total membership in each House of Parliament

a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting in each House of parliament

ratification by the legislatures of at least one half of the States.

Thus, the procedure for amending the constitution has made it clear that it strikes a perfect balance between rigidity and flexibility. It cannot be changed very easily nor it is too difficult to make changes. This provision has been made by the Indian constitution so that when need arises and changes become inevitable then flexibility is required to make necessary changes.
