Answer:

Starting from the roots to aerial parts of the plant the upward transport of water is called ascent of sap. In the plants the process occurs through xylem tissue. The water absorbed by hairs passes through the cortex, passage cells and pericycle enter the tracheary elements of xylem.

Ascent of Sap

  • Ascent of Sap is the process of upward movement or translocation of water along with ionic and non-ionic mineral nutrients from the root up to the aerial plant parts.
  • This water and mineral nutrients move up the plant against the force of gravity.
  • The process takes place through the tracheids of the xylem vessels.
  • The mechanism of this ascent can be explained by various theories like vital, root pressure, and physical force theories.
  • Ascent of Sap occurs even in the tallest plants like the Sequoias and the rate of the ascent depends upon various factors.
