Ozone (O) forms a thick layer in the upper regions of the atmosphere (stratosphere) and absorbs ultraviolet (UV radiations from the Sun. Thus, it protects living organisms from the harmful effects of UV rays. Man-made compounds like chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) are damaging the ozone layer, due to which there is a reduction of the ozone layer and a hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctica.
