Punctuation is essential in any piece of writing as it helps to convey the intended meaning. Let's talk about different punctuation marks.

➽Capital letters:-

Mark the beginning of a sentence.

Examples:- We are going back.

Used at the beginning of a proper noun. Names of places, people, rivers, countries, mountains start with a capital letter.

Examples:- Surbhi is going to Mumbai.

Used at the beginning of every sentence within quotation marks.

Examples:- Hansini asked," Where are you going, Surbhi?

➽Full stop(.), Question mark(?) and exclamation mark(!):-

Full stop is used at the end of declarative and imperative sentences.

Examples:- Rohan is participating in the drawing competition.

With some abbreviations

Examples:- He is pursuing B.A. English (Hons.) from Delhi University.

Question mark is used at the end of a sentence that asks a question/having question tag.

Examples:- Where are you going?

An exclamation mark is used to express emotions like surprise, excitement, anger, sorrow etc.

Examples:- Hurray! We have won the competition.

➽Comma(,):-

It is a short pause between the different parts of a sentence. The basic use of comma is to make the meaning clear but the use of comma can also alter the meaning conveyed in the sentence.

It is used to separate phrases or clauses, additional information from the rest of the sentence.

Examples:- Rohini bought some bananas, apples strawberries and blueberries fr the nearby local market.

Colon(:):-

The colon allows a substantial pause, but doesn't separate two things completely. It signifies the end of a clause within a sentence. It is usually used:

  • To introduce a list

Examples:- Some of the polular tourist destinations in India are:- Agra, Varanasi, Srinagar, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

Semicolon(;):-

The semicolon is a pause which is a little longer than a comma. The semicolon is used:

  • To connect two independent clauses not connected by conjunction.

Examples:- Go there tomorrow; they will be home.

➽Apostrophe('):-

The main use of the apostrophe is to show possession and ownership. It is also used in contractions.

Examples:- We met at Harish's brithday party.

Quotation Marks(" "):-

Quotation marks are used to set off or quote the exact words that have been used by someone or taken from a piece of writing. Quotation marks are always used in pairs.

Examples:- Satish said,' Does his bus go to Shimla?"

Hyphen(-):-

Hyphen is most commonly used to join two separate words to form a single word, often called a compound word.

Examples:- His brother-in-law is a doctor.
