what is the purpose of using an Electromagnet in an electric bell

This is a bell powered by a battery. When the switch is closed, the electromagnet attracts the hammer, which strikes the bell, and at the same time it opens the circuit. Since the current does not flows any more, the electromagnet releases the hammer. The spring pulls back the hammer and closes again the circuit. The cycle repeats over and over as long as the switch is closed.
