SILVER OBJECTS BECOME BLACKENED AND LOSE THEIR SHEEN WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME.THIS HAPPENS DUE TO THE REACTION OF SILVER WITH HYDROGEN SULPHIDE GAS PRESENT IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

Silver, whether jewelry or tableware, exposed to oxygen in the atmosphere will oxidize over time, producing a black patina. Silver article turns black when kept in the air because silver article reacts with sulphur compounds such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) present in air. The phenomenon is called corrosion.
