This is because the earth is actually geoid in shape, i,e, the earth is the widest at the middle, which is the equator, and gets more and more narrow towards the poles.

Heya friend,
it's simply because earth is not a sphere it's shape is of a geoid...ie. It is like an orange( wide from equator region and squeezed from polar region)...
hope this helps..
