Explanation:

Vasco da Gama on his way back to Lisbon visited Cannanore(Kannur) and started a friendly relationship with the king of Kolathunadu. Being dissatisfied with the unfriendly treatment of the Zamorin of Calicut, the Portuguese were happy to have trade engagement with the Kolathiri Raja.

Answer:

Kannur was an important trading centre in the 12th century.

The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama visited Kannur in 1498. Shortly thereafter it became a Portuguese settlement.

As the local Portuguese settlement at Kannur had no sources of revenue, the fort's expenses were met with funding from Goa, the seat of Portuguese rule in India.

In 1790 the British captured the fort. At present, it is under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India.
