Explanation:

The left front assumed power of West Bengal in 1977. They focussed on rural population which was a major chunk of Bengal society. They gained support of rural population by introducing the Barga operation.

This was basically a land reform movement for enlisting the names of sharecroppers and gave them some legal protection against the landlords and increased their profit margin in their crops yield

The Left Front came to power in West Bengal in 1977 as the ruling state government, and in that, they  had gained immense support from the rural population in West Bengal. This support was due to "Operation Barga"

Operation Barga was a rural West Bengal rural reform movement to record sharecropper names (bargadars) while avoiding a time consuming process of registration via the settlement machinery. It gave the bargadars legal immunity from the landlords' eviction & allowed the or entitled sharecroppers their due share of the "produce" . Operation Barga started in 1978 and had ended by the mid-1980s.

Explanation:

  • They find means of promoting their push for agrarian reform through current tenant laws. A double-handed assault was carried out from the Left Leg. The "no-cultivation clause" was taken seriously and the void was filled. At the same time it facilitated "tenant" registration through Operation Barga, which had been widely publicised
  • The West Bengal government instituted Operation Barga in June 1978, on the basis of discussions at a workshop on Land Reforms. In 1981, the West Bengal Government passed a law withdrawing  land reforms exemptions issued to orchards, fisheries, fish and religious federal trusts (but it took some years for the central govt to get this law approved). This was also supported with legal protection by the 1979 Bengal Land Ownership Act and the 1980 Revenue Rules.
  • Operation Barga was intended to document and inform the share-holders (Bargadar) who made up a significant proportion of the agricultural community in West Bengal. Operation Barga was heavily focused on the sharecroppers' "collective" "action" & qualitatively different from the conventional approach of the Revenue Court which benefited the wealthier and more powerful shareholders.
  • The naming and documentation of Sharecroppers and their rights education was an significant step in the growth of their economic and social status. They were guaranteed a more secure life, which would also raise their living conditions, & provide them an incentive to become property owners themselves, by providing these farmers more opportunities and defending them against the abuse by producers..
