The 3 states of matter are due to difference in inter-molecular force of attraction between the molecules of the substance. In solids , these forces are very high . Due to which molecules are very tightle packed .It is , rigid , incompressible , cant flow, has a definite shape and volume. In liquids , these forces are moderate , hence molecules are bit far apart . Hence liquids can flow. In gases , these forces are almost negligible , molecules are very very far apart . Hence gases have no definite shape and volume.

matter exists in three states due to different arrangement , behaviour of particles present in them , for instance in solids the particles experience the most intermolecular force whereas in gases they experience the least
intermolecular spaces in solids are least , in liquids they are a bit more ,and in gases there is most intermolecular spaces between its particles

hope this helps
