Karikala Chola raised the embankments on either side of the river Kaveri in order to divert and regulate the water. He ruled in southern India during the Sangam period. He is considered to be the greatest ruler among the Early Cholas. He built the Grand Anicut. It is also known as the Kallanai. The Grand Anicut is the oldest water-regulator or water diversion structure which is used even in the present. It is a massive dam which is built across the main stream of the river Kaveri. It is made of unhewn stone and is 329 metres long and 20 metres wide.

Karikala was one of greatest early Chola kings and he ruled Southern India during the Sangam period.

He was one of the legends who won over Ceylon. He was attributed by the other Chola kings to have built the dikes along the banks of the Kaveri river. He was also appreciated for this achievement.

Karikala had also built the Grand Anicut, also known as the “Kallanai” which is a massive dam made of unhewn stone across the mainstream of the Kaveri river.

The Kallanai is 1080 feet long and 60 feet wide and it is considered as one of the greatest and oldest structure for diverting and regulating water flows in the world which is still in use.
