The World War I had resulted in a rising demand for the needs of the army. The war drained all of Britain's finances and hence causing a depression. Britain could no longer afford to trade in India. Meanwhile, the handloom trade in India expandedPeople preferred handloom over machine made textiles. Though machines made cheaper cloth, it could not remake the fine designs that one could make with hand.Handloom was seen as a sigh of refinement and wealth. The aristocrats and the nobility would prefer handloom cloth over the machinee-made cloth.
