Explanation:
The dry season is from February to early June. Tamil Nadu gets rains during the monsoon season due to the southwest trade winds which blow towards the northern hemisphere. Tamil Nadu receives rainfall in the winter season due to the northeast trade winds.
There are geographical reasons behind this phenomenon.
Most of the country receives rainfall from the south-west monsoon, which are moisture laden winds that blow from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean towards the Indian subcontinent during summer. However, Tamil Nadu lies in the rain shadow area of these winds and as such, does not receive rainfall in summer.
Now, let us see why Tamil Nadu receives rainfall in winter:
When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, areas closer to the North Pole are colder than those away from it. As such, Siberian region becomes extremely cold and the regions to the south of Himalayas are comparatively warmer.
This is also the reason why the Indian subcontinent gets so many migratory birds in winter- they come here to escape the extreme cold weather of Siberia region.
Because of drastically low temperature in the Siberian region, pressure becomes high- as cool air sinks. It is just the opposite in the areas to the south of the Himalayas.
Winds always blow from high pressure areas to low pressure areas. And these winds from Siberia- during their course- pick moisture from the Bay of Bengal and cause rainfall in Tamil Nadu. These winds are known as north-east monsoon and winter rainfall in Tamil Nadu is attributed to them.
