Well geography would've been a reason for historical conquests when nations try to expand their territory. This is sort of like Geopolitics! Since you can refer to one of the Baltic States, why not use Serbia as an example? The Bosnian War in the late 1990s was due to territorial demands as different ethnicities wanted to create their own homelands.
