I'm going to give you an oversimplified response to a complicated question. Our knowledge can be increased by personal experience. I now know how to disassemble a lawnmower if I take my own apart. Sometimes an event can be generalised, other times it can't (perhaps because I can't disassemble every lawnmower model). There are two types of experience: primary (performing the action) and secondary (reading about the thing, watching youtube videos, etc.). However, there is a feedback loop; when I gain knowledge of something, my personal experience with it grows. As an illustration, I really disassemble a lawnmower after watching a YouTube video about doing so.
But certain things, like being able to recognise my mother's face, we know but cannot express (see Michael Polanyi's Personal Knowledge).
