The heart is a muscular pump that with each heart beat pumps blood around the body. On leaving the heart the blood first travels along the arteries. The pulse is what you feel over an artery as the pressure inside increases following each heart beat. The average pulse rate is between 60-80 beats per minute.

Heart expands and relaxes continuously, one complete cycle of relaxation and contraction of heart is called a heart beat. Everytime the heart beats the blood exerts pressure on the walls of the blood vessels. It can be felt when we touch the artery on the wrist. It is called the pulse rate. Pulse rate is a consequence of beating of heart so the pulse rate is always equal to the heart rate.
