Speed is a scalar quantity which has magnitude Irrespective of it's direction where as velocity is a vector quantity which has both magnitude and direction. Since displacement depends mainly on it's direction, velocity became vector quantity

choky72: yaaa sure
choky72: but my answer was this Speed, being a scalar quantity, is the rate at which an object covers distance. The average speed is the distance (a scalar quantity) per time ratio. Speed is ignorant of direction. On the other hand, velocity is a vector quantity; it is direction-aware.
