The constitution of India is the supreme law which provides the framework for governance, establishes the structure, procedures, powers and duties of government institutions and sets out fundamental rights, directive principles and the duties of citizens.
In the face of rising inequalities, caste conflicts , religious tensions, deterioration of environment, divisions propped up by political parties to win elections and increasing number of crimes against women , the constitution of India’s has acquired more relevance in recent times.
The governments need to follow the directive principles enshrined in the constitution and citizens need to fulfill their duties in the part IVA of the constitution to deal with the challenges of the day
Solutions to many pressing problems in India are available in the Constitution. Both governments and citizens need to realise it in letter and spirit . The Indian Constitution is still the most important and relevant manual for realising a just and prosperous society in India
Uniform civil code for the citizens (Article 44): This is a key directive that needs to be implemented in order to ensure that all citizens are treated equally before the law . This will also help in reducing communal tensions which arise due to the rhetoric of politicians
Protection and improvement of environment and safeguarding of forests and wild life. (Article 48A): Every year the summers are becoming hotter and the number of river disputes in the nation are increasing. Hence the state needs to take measures to protect environment and conserve water resources.
Article 51A (h): The citizens on the other hand, need to fulfill their duty to develop scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform . If the citizens are struck in medieval ages (caste consciousness in case of Hindus and Muslim personal law in case of Muslims) , the nation will not progress
Article 51A (e) : All citizens need to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities; to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women. Everyday the number of crimes against women are increasing and becoming more brutal. The Nirbhaya case is a black spot on our society. The falling sex ratio and female foeticide is also a serious problem. Equal rights and respect for women in society is of utmost importance for progress.
