answer: hydrocloric acid is present in our stomach.the function of HCl is to kill the bacteria that enter along with the food.the mucus prevents the inner lining of the stomach from getting destroyed by the excess effect of HCl.the increasing amount of HCl in the body causes acidity.

HCL present in the stomach dissolves food particles and creates an acidic medium. In acidic environment protein digesting enzymes pepsinogen is converted into pepsin. HCL in the stomach also acts as protective barrier against many disease causing pathogens
