to make the food soft for the further digestive process and the acid also kills the harmful germs and bacteria which are present in the food. the acid present in the stomach is Hydrochloric acid

it contains hydrochloric acid relased through gastric glands or wall of the stomach
acid like pepsin and mucus helps to digest foods and mucus helps to protect inner lining of stomach
